Kenyans and in particular the car import industry breathed a collective sigh of relief as members of parliament threw out the controversial National Automotive Policy proposed by Industry & Trade CS Peter Munya.
This policy was seeking to reduce the age of imported cars with an engine above 1500cc from the current 8 years to 5 from July 2019. It further sought to reduce the same to 3 years by July 2020 and zero years by July 2023.
The Kenya Auto Bazar Association and the Car Importers Association of Kenya were vehemently opposed to this proposal. They argued that the government had not consulted relevant stakeholders and that the policy would punish Kenyans while favoring multinational corporations.
Millions of Kenyans who depend on this industry would likely lose jobs or revenue from such a move. Furthermore, importing newer cars would also mean paying higher import duty which would effectively make it above the reach of many ordinary Kenyans.
The CS seemed to favor the local automotive manufacturing industry which produces about 10,000 cars per year, as opposed to the 85,000 cars imported annually. There has been criticism that the local automotive industry brings in Fully Built Units and Semi Knocked Down Units that require minimum labor to put together.
Mr. Munya in his turn around confirmed that the policy “remains a draft until it is given the authenticity it requires by MPs”.
We will keep an eye on this situation as it develops but for now its business as usual.
Are you thinking of importing a car? Let us make your driving dreams come true!!
Japan’s new emperor, Naruhito, has formally ascended to the Chrysanthemum Throne, replacing his father, Akihito, who had abdicated a day earlier. The sun came out for a morning ceremony at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo on Wednesday, as Naruhito became the 126th Emperor of Japan, the latest in an unbroken line that stretches back 14 centuries. During the special ritual in the palace’s Matsu-no-Ma state room, an almost exclusively male audience saw Naruhito, 59, take possession of royal regalia.
Only adult male imperial family members were allowed to attend the centuries-old ceremony, but Japan’s lone female cabinet member, Satsuki Katayama, was in attendance. Tuesday’s abdication was the first in more than 200 years, since Emperor Kokaku stepped down in 1817.
The new emperor held the first audience with his government following the ceremony, using his first remarks to acknowledge the assumption of the role as an “important responsibility,” and paying tribute to his father’s legacy. “I would like to express my heartfelt respect and appreciation of the comportment shown by His Majesty the Emperor Emeritus as the symbol of the state and of the unity of the people of Japan,” he said. “I also swear that I will act according to the Constitution and fulfill my responsibility as the symbol of the state and of the unity of the people of Japan.
“I sincerely pray for the happiness of the people and the further development of the nation as well as the peace of the world.” Japan’s Prime Minister Shinzo Abe congratulated Naruhito and also pointed to Akihito’s role in transforming the role. “Emperor, we are looking up to you as a symbol of Japan and the Japanese people, and we are filled with hope for peace and prosperity, a bright future of Japan. Everybody is uniting together in heart and building up our new culture in the future.”
New era begins
Naruhito’s ascension signals the start of the “Reiwa” era — each emperor’s reign is marked by their era name. Naruhito’s era name was adapted from an 8th century anthology of classic poetry. While the official government translation of “Reiwa” is “beautiful harmony,” it can also be interpreted as “commanded peace,” a more authoritarian reading. “It is his reign name to shape through his actions and gestures,” says Jeffrey Kingston, director of Asian Studies at Temple University in Japan. He says that Naruhito’s challenge in defining his era will be to avoid getting “co-opted by Japan’s right-leaning politicians.” Symbolic role
The role of Japan’s emperor has changed significantly since Naruhito’s grandfather, Emperor Hirohito, sat on the throne. Once considered the living embodiment of gods, the emperor has become a largely symbolic figure. Unlike other monarchs, Naruhito is a symbol of the state rather than the head of state, and the Japanese emperor wields no political power. Much like his father, who was seen as a reformist, Naruhito sees the role as an institution rather than an embodiment of divinity, says Andrew Gordon, a leading scholar of modern Japanese history at Harvard University.
Japan’s Emperor Akihito, accompanied by Empress Michiko, waves to well-wishers before leaving Ujiyamada Station after their visit to Ise Jingu shrine in Ise in the central Japanese prefecture of Mie, April 18, 2019, as he takes part in a series of rituals ahead of his abdication. Naruhito has indicated that he will continue the outreach and unifying role that his father played.
“There’s nothing in the Constitution that says you have to go around cutting ribbons … that’s a role (Akihito) defined for himself,” Gordon said. “I think his son will continue in the mode of his father; he’s said publicly that he was watching and learning from his father,” he said. “I think the basic style of the monarchy and the (role of the) monarch that he’s put in place, I expect will continue.”

You have just been posted to Kenya on your work assignment, congratulations and karibu Kenya!
You are probably already dreaming of safaris (yay Masai Mara!) and driving on the vast open roads as you explore the beautiful country side.
Not forgetting getting to and from work, obviously!
As such, a vehicle is already on the top of your to do list.
If you are looking to import a quality, low mileage pre-owned vehicle with the duty free facility, here is a flow of how you would go about it:
1.Decide what car you want 2.Settle on an importing agent such as Jap Imports Ltd 3.Agree on car specs i.e. make, color, mileage, payment schedule, timelines etc. 4.Give import go ahead
As your car is enroute to Mombasa duty exemption documents should be prepared. Depending on your organization’s status it could be the Pro 1B or DA1.
These documents should be prepared by the protocol officer in your organization.
To prepare duty exemption papers 3 things are needed: •Commercial invoice of the vehicle •Bill of Lading •Inspection Certificate
The Pro 1B or DA1 documents are prepared in duplicate. Your protocol officer will be issued with one, and the second one circulates internally in the relevant government offices. The second duplicate will be compared with the one your clearing agent submits at the port.
For customs clearing the following documents are needed:
•Original Passport •If working for the UN or UN affiliated organizations the Laissez Passer •Original job ID •Original Pro 1B or DA1 •Original car documents which your agent will have
From here your agent will go ahead and clear the vehicle with customs in the ordinary way. The car will then be delivered to you.
Registration Plates– These will be provided to you by your protocol officer.
NOTE: Your original passport is required to clear the car at customs. On average, and barring any unforeseen delays- this could take 10 working days. It is best not to plan any overseas trips within this time frame.
The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has issued a new CRSP (Current Retail Selling Price) to guide car importers on duty applicable for vehicle imports.
The new CRSP was released on 14th March 2019 and will take effect on 25th March 2019. As is typical the CRSP reflects some changes in the pricing of several cars such as the Audi Q7 and Jaguar XF.
Most significantly this latest CRSP clearly separates the prices of various Land Cruiser trims removing the confusion that was there in the past on duty payable for each trim.
Now the land cruiser GX, AX and VX/ZX trims each have a separate price as shown below:
In 2004, Toyota stopped the production of the popular Hilux, which it had been producing since 1968. During its years of production it was sold in over 180 countries, with global sales hitting 17.3 million. Production however continued select countries such as the UK, Thailand and South Africa.
The main reason for the reintroduction was increasing demand not only in the traditional commercial sector but also in the private sector. Toyota identified a need for customers to live ‘an active lifestyle’ which can be facilitated by a vehicle that is strong but also looks good on the road for private excursions.
What are some of the features of the new Toyota Hilux Pick Up?
•The exterior is designed to be ‘tough’ yet ‘emotional’ giving a sense of power and vigor. It comes in five exterior colors and a black interior. •Available in single cab and double cab body styles •Reinforced deck structure •2.4l diesel engine, offering a powerful performance with a fuel efficiency of 11.8KM/L •Features a part time 4WD, allowing the driver to change driving modes at the touch of a button. The 2WD mode is ideal for urban areas and offers superior quietness and fuel efficiency. The 4WD mode is ideal for rough and slippery terrain. •It features a high strength frame that ensures stability both on-road and off-road •Large hand grips that allow easy entry and exit from the cabin
Good News for Kenya
The re-introduction is certainly good news for Kenyans who would like to import the Hilux. The import process from Japan is much easier compared to say Thailand. Cars used in Japan will also be much cleaner. The Hilux is quite a versatile car and looks good on anyone- from a farmer to a company CEO. In Kenya we value functionality. This Hilux is the perfect balance. Because of its double cab feature you can easily ferry your family to and from the village, on a road trip etc. The spacious canopy allows you to carry luggage, materials or even a goat from the village!
After weeks of waiting your car has finally arrived at the port of Mombasa. Congratulations!
While your agent clears and registers the car at the port, there are a few things that you need to take care of on your end. It is important to do these things now so that you can enjoy your car without any problems.
1. Insurance
You need to buy an insurance cover for your car so that it is insured as it leaves the port. This is important especially if your car will be driven on road to your location.
2. Car Track After the car arrives to your location the next thing is to install a car track system. The advantages of installing car track are obvious. Installing a tracker from a reputable company allows you to: • Know the location of your car at any given time, including where it has been • Stop theft- in case your car is stolen you can stop the engine from anywhere from your phone • Geo fence routes- this allows you to set an area of operation for your car e.g. Nairobi, especially if it’s a taxi/ car hire
3. Engine Service
The car you have imported is pre-owned. This means somebody was driving it in Japan. While the Japanese take excellent care of their cars, it is important to start on a fresh slate. Perform a full engine service to be confident as you drive.
4. Car Identity This is etching of the registration number on side mirrors, windows and front lights etc. This is a great deterrent to petty thieves; no one will steal a marked mirror. Car identity is also important because it helps to identify your car in instances of theft where the registration plates are missing.
5. Securing Spare Tire and Removable Parts
The unfortunate reality in Kenya is that petty crime thrives. You need to secure your spare tire especially for 4WDs, so that it’s not easily removed. Other small removable parts are riveted in.
6. Install Sump Guard A sump guard is a metal plate fitted under the chassis of the car to protect it from mud, corrosion, debris and other impact especially when going off road.
7. Radio System Most cars coming from Japan will have a Japanese radio system. This is quite useless in the Kenyan market. Fortunately you can change it to install something of your preference.
8. Tire Change
This is not always necessary, but if your tires have less than 50% treat you might want to buy new ones and start on a clean slate.
Thinking of importing a car? Talk to Jap Imports Ltd for clean imports and a smooth import process!
All vehicles being imported into Kenya must comply with the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) Verification of Conformity to Kenya Standards Imports Order of 2005. This order, also known as KS 1515:2000 is the “Code of Practice for Inspection of Road Vehicles and for the inspection of used vehicles for radioactive contamination and verification of odometer integrity”.
In Japan, KEBS has mandated QISJ (Quality Inspection Services Japan) and Auto Terminal to carry out pre-export verification on its behalf, and issue inspection certificates.
The main role of these inspection bodies is to ensure that vehicles being imported to Kenya conform to KS 1515:2000
How does KEBS Inspection Work?
After you buy a car in Japan, your exporter applies for inspection. The car is then taken to one of the many inspection centers around Japan. QISJ / Auto Terminal conducts physical checks and also verifies the vehicles documents. If everything is in order, they issues a certificate giving a green light to export. You will be required to show this inspection certificate as you clear your car at the port of Mombasa.
What specifically does QISJ/ Auto Terminal Inspect?
For cars coming to Kenya, QISJ/ Auto Terminal does pre-shipment inspection, in accordance with KS 1515:2020. Key requirements to import a vehicle to Kenya are: • The vehicle must be right hand drive • The vehicle must be 8yrs old from the year of first registration • The difference between the year of manufacture and registration must be less than one year
After confirming that these 3 requirements are in order, they proceeds with physical inspection of the vehicle. Here they do:
In the unfortunate scenario that your car fails the inspection, QISJ/ Auto Terminal will advise your exporting company.Depending on the problem they can recommend repair at a garage (in case of engine light on, dents etc.)
There are however instances where the car cannot be exported to Kenya (such is high radiation levels, extensive rust etc.) and you might have to purchase a different unit.
It is important to import with a reliable company that will bid for quality cars in the auction, rather than waste your time and money with re-inspections.

Tokyo, Japan, August 20, 2015―Lexus announces it will start sales of the refreshed LX 570―positioned as the flagship model in its SUV line-up―at Lexus dealers across Japan from September 14. The LX was first launched in 1996 in North America as the Lexus brand’s first SUV. Since then, sales have grown there, while also expanding primarily to the Middle East and Russia. The new LX boasts dramatic advances in both design and driving performance, and will be sold in Japan with three rows of seats.
The LX possesses a number of features that define it as Lexus’ flagship SUV. Its recently updated interior and exterior design language balances power and luxury. On the technological front, numerous key passenger comfort features are included as standard, including Lexus Climate Concierge and Easy Access, which automatically adjusts vehicle height during ingress and egress.
The LX comes equipped with a 5.7-liter V8 engine that provides high torque at low rpm. Additionally, a new driving mode called Customize Mode―a Lexus first―helps the LX achieve extremely stable and adaptive performance both on and off the road. Furthermore, to further increase safety and peace of mind, the LX is fitted with the Lexus Safety System + package which, as part of a multi-faceted approach to active safety, combines millimeter-wave radar with a camera to achieve high reliability and performance. This is the first time that Lexus Safety System + has been installed in a vehicle sold in Japan.
Chief Characteristics of the LX
Design that balances power and luxury
The exterior of the vehicle combines the power of an SUV with the inherent luxury befitting a Lexus flagship. The front profile provides a sense of stability with its daringly muscular lower portion, while the side profile emphasizes a refined yet bold and dynamic underbody and the rear cuts a sturdy yet graceful outline.
The spindle grille projects a sense of strength and elegance, and symbolizes the ever-evolving nature of Lexus. The lower portion of the grille takes on a protective shape while the inner grille bar juts out energetically from the hood and merges with the grille frame to form a single hard surface.
Sequential LED turn signal lamps are utilized in a Lexus vehicle for the first time. These innovative lamps light up in a flowing sequence, increasing visibility when turning right or left.
Also available from Lexus for the first time are 21-inch aluminum wheels. The combination of machine-cut highlights and metallic grey, and the addition of a new center ornament, together generate a luxurious feel.
The interior is, of course, highly functional, yet it also exudes a high-quality feel through the juxtaposition of such contrasting materials as metal, leather, and wood grain. The horizontally positioned instrument panel enables the driver to easily assess the position and stance of the vehicle, a core requirement for any true SUV.
Outstanding driving performance on and off the road
The LX’s 5.7-liter V8 engine boasts a wide torque band able to generate approximately 90 percent of its maximum torque at 2,000 rpm. Combined with a Super Intelligent Electronically Controlled Eight-speed Automatic Transmission, the LX demonstrates easy acceleration on-road and ample power at low and medium speeds off-road.
Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS) improves handling by adjusting the steering gear ratio according to the speed of the vehicle, thus providing outstanding maneuverability and cruising stability despite the size of the vehicle.
Customize Mode has been included for the first time among the drive mode settings on a Lexus. Upon selection of Customize Mode, the powertrain, chassis, and air conditioning controls can each be freely adjusted. This enables the driver to select a driving mode better suited to his or her preferences, thereby improving the driving experience.
To complement the Drive Mode Select Switch, the LX comes equipped with 4-Wheel Active Height Control suspension (AHC) and Adaptive Variable Suspension system (AVS), both of which freely control the vehicle’s suspension. 4-Wheel AHC automatically controls vehicle height in various situations; for example, when the Lexus-first Easy Access feature is active, vehicle height is lowered when the engine is turned off in order to facilitate ingress and egress. In addition, AVS automatically adjusts the attenuation force of the suspension to suit the prevailing driving conditions, naturally and smoothly controlling the vehicle’s vibrations and providing outstanding comfort, maneuverability, and stability.
Two features assist driving depending on the prevailing off-road conditions: Crawl Control allows the vehicle to be operated at extremely low speeds through use of the steering wheel alone, without the need to use the accelerator or brake pedals, while the Multi-terrain Select switch increases AWD performance by optimizing traction and brake control. When driving with Crawl Control implemented, turn assist functions are engaged to enhance turning capabilities. This reduces the number of times the steering wheel has to be turned when executing tight turns, thus making the driver’s job easier.
The LX is also equipped with Multi-terrain Monitors, a system of four cameras that monitor conditions around the vehicle. The system allows the driver to check the road conditions in six blind spot areas around the vehicle, both on and off the road, and facilitates driving on narrow roads or moving over to the road shoulder. In addition, as a Lexus first, the LX features an under-floor view that allows the driver to check both conditions under the vehicle and tire positions while driving off-road.
Advanced safety technologies including the Lexus Safety System + active safety package
Lexus Safety System + is a package of multi-faceted, active safety technologies. The package includes: Pre-collision System (PCS) with pedestrian detection function; Lane Departure Alert (LDA), a system that alerts the driver if the vehicle is drifting from its lane; Adaptive Hi-beam System (AHS)2, which selectively blocks sections of high beams that might interfere with the vision of preceding and on-coming vehicles; and Radar Cruise Control (with All-speed Tracking function), a system for use on highways which ensures that a safe distance is maintained from the preceding vehicle.
A number of other safety features are also included as standard: Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) is a system that monitors any vehicles to the rear that are difficult to see with the door mirrors, plus an area in adjacent lanes of up to about 60 meters to the rear, and then notifies the driver of any rapidly approaching vehicles; Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), a system for use when reversing out of car parks that utilizes the BSM radar to detect and notify the driver of vehicles approaching from the rear left or right; Multi-terrain Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), which, in addition to the standard ABS function of preventing wheels from locking up during braking, provides outstanding braking performance even when driving off-road; Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD); and Brake Assist.
Fine-tuned comfort features for enhanced driving pleasure
The Lexus Climate Concierge advanced climate control system now features the first-of-its-kind3 Climate Concierge Switch, a feature that unifies control of automatic air conditioning, steering-wheel heating, and heating and seat ventilation for driver, passenger, and second row seats. In addition, the system detects whether passengers are present in the passenger and second row seats, and switches the various functions on or off accordingly.
The Vehicle Information and Communication System WIDE (VICS WIDE4), equipped on a Lexus for the first time, is a new navigation system that offers increased usability, such as heightened accuracy of traffic information. It takes advantage of the LX’s 12.3-inch widescreen display, which can display maps full-screen and provides excellent visibility.
The rear-seat entertainment system included as an option features two high-resolution 11.6-inch monitors built into the backs of the front seats. The viewing angle of the displays can be adjusted to provide optimal visibility.
Tokyo, April 1, 2015―Lexus has shown that it has once again redefined the luxury-sport-utility segment with the unveiling of the totally redesigned “RX” at the 2015 New York Auto Show today. As the best-selling model in the brand’s 26-year history―with sales of more than 2.1 million units―the RX represents three out of ten vehicles ever sold by Lexus. The new model looks to build on that trend with a completely redesigned luxurious interior wrapped in a chiseled, attractive new body style. The large dose of Lexus brand DNA that’s been artfully incorporated into the details can not only be seen, but also felt. The reimagined RX boasts exceptional on-road performance and new safety technologies that include the innovative Lexus Safety System+.
RX Chief Engineer Takayuki Katsuda said: “Our ambition has been to make a bold and completely new statement in this segment while building on and staying true to the pioneering values of previous RX generations.”
A Bold Exciting New Look
That the new RX makes a powerful visual statement is obvious at first glance. The front features a completely new fascia that’s highlighted by an emboldened spindle grille with a chrome-plated border and triple L-shape-LED headlamps. Together with the redesigned fog lamps, this gives the RX an elegant yet futuristic aura. Muscular front fender flares add to the vehicle’s sporty attitude.
When seen from the side, the sharp character line that runs from the front fenders to the rear end, together with a flowing roofline, give the RX a dynamic profile that minimizes drag and decreases front and rear lift. All this makes the vehicle more stable at high speed with a sharp reduction in wind noise. A truly innovative styling element is the blacked-out C-pillars, which provide the illusion of a floating roofline never before seen on a Lexus. Also, newly designed 20-inch aluminum wheels with larger tires improve the vehicle stance and proportions. These 20-inch wheels can also be customized with body color-matching inserts to emphasize individuality.
The new RX’s rear appearance has been sharpened and exudes rock-solid stability, highlighted by LED L-shaped taillights that wrap around the sides of the vehicle, creating a wider, more authoritative presence when illuminated. When lit, a brilliant glow spans laterally from the body to the back door―a Lexus first.
Inside, the RX’s new luxurious cabin is one of comfort and luxury, with repositioned trim pieces that exude a high level of class, and specially finished laser-cut ornamentation available for those who desire an extra dose of opulence. A large heads-up display (HUD) takes center stage, while the information display area, featuring a 12.3-in. monitor, has been separated from the main operations area. Also, the shift lever has been moved away from the front of the instrument panel to optimize operability and create more space for the driver. But the driver isn’t the only one who benefits from the new interior: Rear-seat occupants are treated to more leg and knee space, and the newly developed seats offer heating and power reclining features that not only enhance convenience, they also provide a luxury feel and a sense of hospitality and sophistication. A retractable power panorama roof enhances the RX cabin’s spaciousness and provides occupants with a refreshing open-air experience.
Gen Ikeda, the chief designer of the RX, said: “We designed the RX to have a high amount of excitement and strength. The lengthened wheelbase and larger tire size result in sporty powerful proportions. Even while ensuring a high level of luxury and space within the cabin, the RX’s silhouette remains sleek and dynamic, while the interior has been designed for easy operation with luxurious execution.”
Smooth, Powerful and Efficient Under the Hood
Under the RX 350’s hood is an upgraded and more powerful 3.5-liter V-6 aiming to deliver 300 hp with direct injection, mated to a new 8-speed automatic transmission. Based on this improved powertrain is the RX 450h’s Atkinson-cycle 3.5-liter V-6. When combined with the electric motor generator, the total output is expected to be around 300 hp. All RX engines have been tuned to achieve high fuel economy and low carbon emissions.
Better Handling and Stability
When it comes to delivering precise, controlled handling, the new RX offers impressive dynamic capability. The entire chassis has been fortified to provide better stability and control through turns. The vehicle’s body structure has been strengthened with added stiffness, helping to drastically improve its handling response while reducing engine and road noise in the cabin. The vehicle also features innovative technology, such as Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM), each system designed to recognize potentially dangerous situations and make automatic and often transparent adjustments to ensure the car remains in control when entering and exiting corners. Also, All-Wheel Drive improves the RX’s handling performance and stability on both dry and slick surfaces alike.
The RX’s fully independent suspension system, which consists of MacPherson struts up front and a double wishbone setup at rear, has been tuned and reinforced to improve handling while keeping ride quality remarkably smooth. Available on most RX versions is the Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS), which electronically monitors and adapts the suspension damping and steering to ensure optimal handling and ride depending on the driving conditions. This means that wherever the RX goes, the AVS will automatically make lightning-quick adjustments to the shock absorber settings, ensuring the smoothest ride quality possible. The system is also designed to produce less body lean through corners, providing an engaging driving experience.
Safety is a Priority with Lexus Safety System +
Lexus has always stressed safety in all of its vehicles, so it should come as no surprise that the new RX is significantly improved in the areas concerning the well-being of its occupants. Among these new improvements are the upgraded body structure that heightens the overall passive safety of the RX, and Lexus Safety System+, which helps avoid or mitigate collisions across a wide range of vehicle speeds. Introduced globally as either standard or optional equipment, Lexus Safety System+ integrates several of Lexus’s existing active safety technologies. These include the Pre-Collision System (PCS) that detects sudden stops initiated by the vehicle in front, warning drivers of potential contact with obstacles ahead; Lane Departure Alert (LDA), which issues an audible signal if the vehicle strays from its intended lane; and Automatic High Beam (AHB) that helps ensure optimal forward visibility during nighttime driving. As part of a multi-faceted approach to active safety, the Lexus Safety System+ package utilizes a millimeter-wave radar that works together with a camera to keep the RX in its intended driving lane via the Lane Keeping Assist feature (LKA) and enhances the target detection for the Dynamic Radar Cruise Control. For even higher safety levels, Adaptive High-beam System (AHS), a Panoramic View Monitor (PVM) and Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) are available as optional equipment.
The RX F Sport
For those who prefer even more excitement and performance in their luxury sport-utility vehicles, there is the RX F Sport, which will be available with all of the model’s engine offerings. Lexus vehicles designated with the F Sport badge are equipped with a number of special visual and performance features that set them apart from other versions. In the RX’s case, the spindle grille and lower center piece of the rear bumper possess an “F” mesh design, instantly giving the vehicle a sportier flair. New alloy wheels, exclusive to the F Sport, also help give the RX a commanding presence. Inside, the driver is treated to a custom F Sport instrument cluster as well as a sport steering wheel, featuring perforated leather and an attractive F Sportemblem, complete with paddle shifters. Exclusive colors and trim pieces are also part of the sporty package.
The RX F Sport’s performance on the road has been enhanced by an active stabilizer system whose world’s first cutting-edge technology keeps the vehicle’s body amazingly flat through corners. The aforementioned AVS, which also helps keep the vehicle planted to driving surfaces through turns, is standard on RX F Sport. The driver can select the AVS-enhanced Sport S+ mode, in addition to Eco, Normal and Sports S settings, on the Drive Mode Select control located on the center console.
The Luxury SUV Bar Has Been Raised Yet Again by the New RX
One thing is perfectly clear: Lexus’ best-selling sport-utility vehicle has dramatically raised the bar yet again in the luxury sport-utility segment, flawlessly combining luxurious comfort and bold styling inside and out, as well as delivering exciting driving performance.
“The pioneering spirit of Lexus drives us to create new technology and gives rise to new ideas. It allows us to introduce new vehicles with leading-edge features. And indeed, we are committed to bringing amazement and inspiration beyond expectations to the world. I believe this new RX will not only surprise new customers, but will also delight and satisfy our loyal customers, whose high expectations will be met by many new innovations,” Katsuda said.
Beijing, China, April 20, 2014―Lexus’ first luxury compact crossover, the “NX”, made its world premiere here today at the 2014 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition1, which runs through April 29. The NX, created for urban and active lifestyles, features an edgy, emotional design that is distinctively Lexus. Sales of the NX are scheduled to begin in world markets in the second half of 2014.
Two powertrain variants of the NX are on display in Beijing: the NX 300h, a highly efficient hybrid, and the NX 200t, the first Lexus fitted with a turbo engine.
2.0-liter turbo engine
The Lexus-developed direct-injection turbo engine features the world-first2 combination of a cylinder head with an integrated water-cooled exhaust manifold and a twin scroll turbocharger. This combination in addition to other new technologies such as a turbo-specific D-4ST fuel injection technology and continuous variable valve timing with expanded valve opening angles (VVT-iW) realizes both an excellent ride and environmental performance.
The all-new six-speed automatic transmission, developed to match the new turbo engine, uses newly-developed control logic to calculate required engine torque. The resulting maximized engine torque ensures responsive and smooth acceleration as well as high fuel efficiency.
The 2.0-liter NX is the first Lexus to be fitted with an idling-stop system, which reduces fuel consumption by automatically switching off the engine when the vehicle is idling. The system used in the NX has extremely fast engine-restart time.
To ensure Lexus quality and performance, the new turbo engine has been tested for more than 1 million kilometers.
2.5-liter hybrid engine
The 2.5-liter hybrid version of the NX combines a high thermal efficiency 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle engine with an integrated high-torque motor. This improves fuel efficiency and reduces CO2 emissions.
The hybrid variant also features sprung-weight damping control to increase ride comfort and handling stability. Vehicle pitching is reduced through the precise control of the drive motor’s torque.
Responsive handling
The NX employs specialized Lexus manufacturing techniques such as body adhesives and laser-screw welding3 to improve the rigidity of the suspension system as well as the the body, enhancing overall driving performance.
A newly developed shock absorber, capable of controlling even the smallest micro-level fluctuations, contributes to excellent handling stability and ride comfort. Additionally, the NX features a new Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS), capable of variable control in 30 stages.
All-wheel drive turbo models feature a Dynamic Torque Control All-Wheel Drive system which automatically switches from front-wheel drive to all-wheel drive by calculating the driver’s intended driving line and adjusting the distribution of torque to the rear wheels as required. This increases cornering performance on all surfaces. All-wheel drive hybrid models also benefit from improved cornering, particularly on slippery surfaces, due to the E-Four system.
The F Sport grade boasts numerous exclusive features such as specially-tuned suspension and interior and exterior design. In addition, the F Sport variant achieves even sharper handling due to performance dampers that improve rigidity while absorbing small amounts of flex.
Driver support and safety features
The Panoramic View Monitor, introduced into a Lexus vehicle for the first time, helps the driver avoid other vehicles and pedestrians approaching from the sides. This system combines video from four cameras mounted to the front and rear sides of the vehicle, offering a view of everything happening around the car, including in blind spots. The display is automatically adjusted based on gear-stick operation, with the system able to display enlarged views from above the vehicle.
Radar Cruise Control with All-speed Tracking Function maintains inter-vehicle distance within a set speed and supports the driver by detecting the vehicle ahead and ensuring that an appropriate distance is maintained from cruising speeds down to a stop.

Interior and Exterior Designs Combine Strength and Quality
The Vanguard’s interior and exterior designs are based on the Toyota brand design philosophy “Vibrant Clarity”, which is suited to active urban lifestyles.
A strong sense of discerning and sophisticated individuality is expressed through its SUV sturdiness.
Exterior
The front features slim, robust headlights that curve around to the side of the vehicle, while the integrated fender and bumper express stability. The hood has two sculpted lines that combine with distinctive fog lights to convey both strength and refinement.
The side creates a silhouette that flows smoothly from the hood to the roof and the rear spoiler.
The rear displays stability with a bumper that extends to the side, while the combination of taillights with clear lenses and LED lamps convey a sense of quality.
Interior
The two-tiered instrument panel emphasizes the expansive breadth of the interior, as well as the openness and comfort of the cabin space.
The bronze-tone finish used on the center console and door trim evokes a strong sense of refinement and quality.
A combination of real leather and Alcantara®*, a leading international brand of suede-like artificial leather, is used on the seats. Meticulous attention to the feel and comfort of the seats expresses an unobtrusive quality.
* “Alcantara®” is a registered trademark owned by Alcantara S.p.A..
Roomy, Practical and Comfortable Interior
Three-row seat models for accommodating seven occupants and two-row seat models for five occupants are available.
The third row of seats in the three-row seat models can be stored under the floor to create a roomy rear cargo space.
The second row of seats (with reclining function) have backrests that fold in a 60/40 split and a “super tilt-down” mechanism that allows both the seat cushions and the backrests to fold down to create a nearly flat luggage space. Vehicles with two rows of seats feature release levers located on the sides of the rear cargo space, easily accessible after opening the hatch door, making it possible to retract the second row of seats.
By making components below the floor slimmer, and by installing the rear shock absorbers at an angle, the opening to the luggage space has been placed close to the ground and the luggage space made wider, which facilitates the loading and unloading of cargo.
The HDD navigation system (compatible with G-Book mX and G-Book mX Pro telematics services) is equipped with advanced navigation features, including “Map on Demand” for updating the navigation system maps with the latest information, as well as a variety of multimedia functions.
The Smart Entry & Start System uses a key that does not need to be removed from the driver’s pocket to lock and unlock the doors, as well as a push button for starting the engine.
The interior features three independent, large Optitron Meters with excellent visibility and fully automatic independent temperature controls (with temperature sensors) for the driver’s and passenger’s side, complete with a pollen-removal mode that filters out pollen, dust and other impurities from the air.
Superior Cruising Performance that Enhances the Fun of Driving
The 3.5-liter V6 2GR-FE engine is combined with 5 Super ECT (Super Intelligent Electronically-controlled, Five-speed Automatic Transmission) for smooth and powerful acceleration and cruising with power to spare.
The 2.4-liter 2AZ-FE engine achieves high torque at low and medium speeds for stable cruising and smooth acceleration at high speeds. The engine is paired with Super CVT-i (Super Continuously Variable Transmission-intelligent) and a seven-speed Sports Sequential Shiftmatic transmission that provides the feel of a manual transmission, to achieve high fuel efficiency and smooth cruising.
Adopted as standard equipment on all vehicles in the series is Active Torque Control 4WD, which distributes optimum torque to the front and rear wheels depending on driving status, such as vehicle speed and road surface conditions. The system is integrated with S-VSC (Steering-assisted Vehicle Stability Control), which optimally balances driving power, steering and braking, to achieve stable driving regardless of road conditions.
A newly designed suspension and a highly rigid body provide excellent handling and cruising stability as well as a comfortable ride.
A “4WD LOCK” mode on vehicles fitted with the 3.5-liter engine maximizes the allocation of power to the rear wheels, enhancing driving in mud and on poor or unfinished road surfaces.
Class-leading Environmental and Safety Performance
The 2.4-liter models boast a fuel efficiency of 12.6km/l in the 10-15 test cycle outlined by the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MLIT) with CO2 emissions under the test cycle just 184g/km, achieving fuel efficiency that exceeds by 20% the level called for by Japan’s 2010 standards*. Both NOx (nitrogen oxides) and NMHC (non-methane hydrocarbons) have also been reduced, meaning all models achieve emissions levels 75% lower than the 2005 standards under MLIT’s Approval System for Low-emission Vehicles.
Eco-VAS (Eco-Vehicle Assessment System)―Toyota’s original comprehensive environmental impact assessment system―was implemented to efficiently achieve overall reduction of environmental impact throughout the vehicle’s entire lifecycle. Environmental targets were set in the initial vehicle development stage and a life cycle assessment was carried out to achieve a reduction of air contaminants and CO2, etc., throughout all stages of the vehicle’s life from production and use to disposal.
A review of the materials, processing methods and adhesives used for interior parts resulted in a reduction in the amount of VOCs (volatile organic compounds) used, thereby also reducing the unpleasant odors emitted from such compounds and achieving the Japanese automobile industry’s voluntary goals.
An Eco Driving Indicator lights up when the vehicle is being efficiently operated to raise the driver’s awareness of environmentally considerate driving and, thus, contribute to higher fuel efficiency.
The new vehicle adopts an advanced GOA (Global Outstanding Assessment) collision-safety body that has been further developed to meet stricter than normal conditions by incorporating the concept of omni-directional compatibility. Through the use of a body that effectively absorbs collision impact by diffusing it throughout its structure, Toyota satisfied all independent targets for survival space and occupant injury.
The body structure has been developed to further reduce pedestrian head injuries in an effort to achieve one of the highest levels of injury prevention in its class.
Front seat SRS side airbags and SRS curtain shield airbags that cover the front and rear seats come standard on all vehicles in the series.
The front-seat structures are based on the WIL (Whiplash Injury Lessening) concept and come with stronger seat frames and greater backrest give. They were designed based on analyses using THUMS (Total Human Model for Safety), incorporating a structural design that reduces stress on the neck during low-speed rear impact.
