About the Nissan X-Trail

The Nissan X-Trail, which was introduced in 2001, is a multi-purpose compact crossover SUV that blends pleasant on-road driving manners and family-friendly practicality with noteworthy off-road capability, just as its ‘X-Trail’ name suggests. According to Nissan, the X-Trail was declared one of the most popular SUVs in the world in 2016 based on its global sales statistics.

Here in Kenya, it has also continued to win over people looking to import SUVs or buy used ones over the years. Most Kenyans love it for its affordability, high ground clearance, its impressive utility, and its overall good value. The X-Trail is also available with either 2WD or AWD.

Let’s have a look at what a used Nissan X-Trail in Kenya has to offer.

What are the main features of a Nissan X-Trail?

The 1st and 2nd-generation models of the X-Trail have grilles and front/rear bumpers that are ruggedly-styled to emphasize the SUV’s 4WD character. Their boxy designs also make them look strong and hardy. On the outside, they may feature 17-Inch alloy rims, roof rails, foglights, and halogen headlights. The 3rd-generation models (2013-2020) embody Nissan’s more recent design language, featuring boomerang-shaped daytime running lights and taillights and a more fluid body shape.

On the inside, most X-Trail models feature numerous storage points like a center console storage bin, a glovebox, a dashboard storage shelf, and front-door storage pockets. They may also offer air conditioning, manual/power adjustable front seats, cloth/leather seat upholstery, and steering-wheel-mounted audio controls.

How spacious is the Nissan X-Trail?

Thanks to its high roof and boxy shape, the 1st and 2nd-generation X-Trail models offer more than enough headspace in both rows for tall passengers. They also offer five supportive seats with sufficient legroom for each passenger in both rows. The 3rd-generation models (2013-2020) also offer sufficient headroom despite their lower, curvier rooflines. Also, thanks to their slightly longer wheelbases, these models offer more legroom in the second row. They are also available in either two-row or three-row configurations, meaning that 3rd-generation X-Trail models can carry up to seven passengers.

The Nissan X-Trail also excels in the boot space department, offering a healthy 603 liters of space in its 2nd-generation models and 550 liters of space in its 3rd-generation models. The 2nd-generation models also get a cool, partitioned cargo tray under the cargo area floor; the 3rd-generation models without the 3rd-row seats also get an equally innovative, divide-n-hide configurable cargo system. Also worth noting is the rear seats of all X-Trail models can be folded down to create even more space for shopping, cargo, or luggage.

Is the Nissan X-Trail fuel efficient? And what are its engine transmission options?

If you import a 3rd-generation X-Trail, you are likely to get it with a 2.0L MR20DD 4-cylinder petrol engine that pairs with a continuously variable transmission. This engine may deliver a fuel economy of up to 16.4 kilometres per litre in the FWD models, and a slightly lower fuel economy of 15.6 kilometres per litre in the AWD models.

The 1st and 2nd-generation X-Trail models, on the other hand, may feature a 2.0L 4-cylinder petrol engine, a 2.5L 4-cylinder petrol engine, or a 2.0L 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine. Depending on the vehicle’s configuration, these engines may pair with a 6-speed manual, 6-speed automatic, or a CVT. The turbo diesel engine is the most efficient, delivering up to 15.2 kilometres per litre in the FWD models.

What is the ground clearance of the Nissan X-Trail?

All Nissan X-Trail models do well in the ground clearance department, standing approx. 8.3 inches above the ground. Therefore, with the X-Trail, you can drive over speed bumps or potholes on most roads in Kenya without worrying about damaging its undercarriage.

Can You Find Spare Parts for a Used Nissan X-Trail in Kenya?

Yes, you can find both new and used Nissan X-Trail spare parts in most auto shops across the country.

Is the Nissan X-Trail a reliable SUV? Does it have good resale value?

Going by the reviews that X-Trail owners have given over the years, it is safe to say that this SUV offers good or average reliability; it may not be the best in its segment in this respect, but it does okay compared to its competitors. Also, because it is a popular SUV, it tends to get great resale values.

Nissan made a lot of improvements to the X-Trail’s 3rd-generation models, so those are the models you ought to search for if you want to import a Nissan X-Trail to Kenya. These models have more features, are more fuel efficient, and have a more reliable engine. However, it must also be said that the 3rd-generation models are less capable than their predecessors when it comes to off-road driving and utility.

About the Nissan X-Trail

Array

The Nissan X-Trail is one of the most common compact SUVs that you’ll find on Kenyan roads. This is partly because it is one of the most affordable compact/midsize crossover SUVs on the market. Most Kenyans also like the fact that the X-Trail is a low maintenance SUV. It yields commendably high fuel economy and its spare parts are affordable and readily available owing to its popularity. The Nissan X-Trail also offers a roomy and comfortable interior, good ride quality, a high driving position, excellent visibility, and a large cargo area, so it is a worthwhile alternative to conventional cars. This SUV also offers impressive off-road performance, especially when equipped with its optional 4x4 system.

The Generations of the Nissan X-Trail

1st Generation (T30): 2000–2007

The 1st generation of the Nissan X-Trail dubbed the T30 first went on sale in November 2000 in Japan. Unlike the off-road-oriented Nissan Terrano II SUV that preceded it, the 5-passenger T30 is more at home on paved roads thanks to the fact that it is built upon the Nissan FF-S platform, the same platform that was used on the Nissan Almera and the Nissan Primera models of that time. The X-Trail T30 offers impressive off-road capability when called upon thanks to its high ground clearance and its optional ALL MODE 4X4i system. It features rugged yet classy exterior styling, with a boxy shape that yields plenty of space for both passengers and cargo. The T30 also offers sure-footed handling, good steering, and compliant rides. In 2003, the X-Trail T30 got a facelift that included minor exterior and interior styling changes as well as options like a pop-up steering system, a hyper roof rail, a CarWings infotainment system, and a navigation system. Many models of this JDM X-Trail T30 are offered with a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter QR20DE 4-cylinder petrol engine that makes 110 kW / 148 hp and 200 Nm / 147 lb.-ft. of torque. This engine paired with a 4-speed automatic or 5-speed manual transmission. The GT models are offered with a turbocharged 2.0-liter SR20VET 4-cylinder petrol engine that produces 206 kW / 276 hp and 309 Nm / 228 lb-ft of torque. The Nissan X-Trail T30 is also available in special-edition Axis Autech and Rider Autech models that feature exclusively styled exteriors and interiors.

2nd Generation (T31): 2007-2013

The redesigned 2nd generation Nissan X-Trail (dubbed the T31) was launched on 22nd of August 2007 in Japan. With the X-Trail T31, Nissan basically improved on the strengths of the T30 generation. The T31 models greatly resemble the T30 models in terms of their design philosophy, only that the T31 models look sleeker with more dynamic lines and curves. The X-Trail T31 is also beefier and larger than the T30 (5.1 inches longer and 1.6 inches wider) so it has a more dominant presence. The X-Trail T31 models also offer a more refined interior with high quality materials, plenty of seating space, and copious utility. These 2nd-generation models also offer better off-road capability thanks to their high ground clearance, their tougher underbody protection, and their more advanced 4X4 system. In 2010, the T31 X-Trail got a facelift that included revised front fascia styling, LED rear combination lamps, a different wheel design, additional color options, finer interior materials, and several other tech features. In terms of engine options, the JDM 2nd generation X-Trail can be had with a 2.0-liter MR20DE 4-cylinder petrol engine, a 2.5-liter QR25DE 4-cylinder petrol engine, or a turbocharged 2.0-liter M9R 4-cylinder common rail diesel engine. The Nissan X-Trail T31 is also offered in special-edition Axis Autech and Rider Autech models that feature exclusively styled, premium-looking exteriors and interiors.

3rd Generation (T32): 2013 - Present

In December 2013, Nissan again launched a new, fully redesigned version of the Nissan X-Trail that was based on the new Nissan/Renault Common Module Family (CMF) platform. Compared to the prior platform, this platform is more refined, yielding lower levels of road noise, vibrations, and harshness, so the T32 X-Trail can be said to be more pleasant to drive. This generation, dubbed the T32, looks quite different from its prior models. Its exterior styling cues and its overall silhouette are way more dynamic and stylish, emphasizing the fact that the new X-Trail T32 is an all-new model that offers new, more modern aspects. The T32 is also just as long as the post-facelift T31 X-Trail but just slightly wider and shorter. The T32 X-Trail also offers a roomy and refined cabin that can be had in 2-row and 3-row options, meaning that the T32 X-Trail can accommodate up to 7 passengers. The T32 X-Trail also offers a wider selection of safety features. Its engine options are also more fuel efficient.

THE 2nd-GENERATION X-TRAIL (T31) VS THE 3RD-GENERATION X-TRAIL (T32)

Power and Fuel Economy

The 2nd-generation 20S and 20X grades come equipped with a 2.0-liter MR20DE 4-cylinder petrol engine that produces 101 kW / 135 hp and 200 Nm / 147 lb-ft of torque. This engine pairs with Nissan’s Xtronic CVT (continuously variable transmission). In the pre-facelift models of these grades (2007-2010), this engine delivers a fuel economy of up to 14 km per liter (in the 2WD models), but in the post-facelift models (2010-2013), the fuel economy goes down to 12 km per liter (in the 2WD models). The 25S 4WD and 25X 4WD X-Trail T31 grades feature a larger 2.5-liter QR25DE 4-cylinder petrol engine rated at 125 kW / 168 hp and 230 Nm / 170 lb-ft of torque. This engine pairs with an Xtronic CVT that includes a 6-speed manual mode. In the pre-facelift models of these grades (2007-2010), this 2.5-liter engine delivers a fuel economy of 11.6 km per liter, while in the post-facelift models, the fuel economy again goes down to 10.6 km per liter. The X-Trail T31 20GT Clean Diesel 4WD grade comes equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter M9R 4-cylinder common rail diesel engine rated at 127 kW / 170 hp and 360 Nm / 265 lb-ft of torque. This engine pairs with a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. According to Nissan, this engine can deliver a fuel economy of up to 15 km per liter in all 20GT models.

The Japanese 3rd-generation X-Trail models, on the other hand, feature only two engine options. One is a 2.0-liter MR20DD 4-cylinder petrol engine rated at 108 kW / 145 hp and 207 Nm / 153 lb-ft of torque. Thanks to fuel saving technologies like start & stop technology, this engine delivers an improved fuel economy of up to 16.4 km per liter in the 2WD models. The other engine option is a hybrid version of the MR20DD engine that was made available from 2015. This hybrid engine pairs the MR20DD engine with an electric motor that is connected to a large lithium-ion battery pack. According to Nissan, this engine delivers a fuel economy of up to 20.6 km per liter. Both of these T32 engines pair with an Xtronic CVT.

Exterior and Interior Features

The 2nd-generation Nissan X-Trail looks rugged yet stylish. Its boxy shape and beefy styling cues make it look big, more like a midsize SUV. Its large fenders, high ground clearance, and its all-around hard-plastic underskirting also give a sense of its impressive off-road performance. On the outside, most grades feature large three-dimensional halogen/bi-xenon headlamps, three-dimensional rear combination lamps, and a hyper roof rail. On the inside, this SUV offers a high quality interior with soft padding around the instrument panel, armrest, and door trim, cloth or optional synthetic leather seating materials, and a fully water-proof interior (with a waterproof floor, a waterproof ceiling, and a washable luggage board). It may also feature air conditioning, a pop-up steering system, optional heated and cooled cup holders, an optional CarWings navigation system with a hard-disk drive, an optional intelligent key system, and an optional side blind monitor. The 20Stt grade adds a standard intelligent key system, an engine immobilizer, and halogen fog lamps. The 20Xtt and 25Xtt grades also feature standard fog lamps and mudguards, xenon headlamps, and exclusive 18-inch aluminum wheels on the outside as well as sporty all-black interiors. The clean diesel 20GT grade features an intelligent key system, step lamps, sporty cloth seat materials, 6 speakers, heated front seats, heated rear outboard seats, and headrests for the rear seats. The Axis grades feature exclusive body colors, a sleeker, more elegant front fascia with fog lamps and with straight, body-color lines that run across the grille and exclusively designed front bumper. They also feature an exclusively styled rear bumper, all-around body-color underskirting, and exclusive wheel designs. On the inside, the Axis models feature exclusive beige interior color, genuine leather seating materials, exclusive instrument cluster molding, exclusive finishing for the center cluster and door armrest, and exclusive door trim and floor materials. It also offers heated front seats. The Axis Performance Spec grade adds an exclusive sport-tuned suspension system, a dedicated sports muffler, exclusive performance tires, and the Performance Spec Emblem.

The post-facelift models add a sleeker grille, a more contemporary headlight and front bumper design, and 17-inch wheels with a different wheel design. On the inside, the post-facelift models add an instrument cluster vehicle information display, additional interior color options, and more premium-looking fabric materials. The facelift also came with the launch of a new Extremer X off-road-themed model that features large foglamps and exclusive rugged exterior styling with a front bumper overrider, underbody panels, and mudguards.

The 3rd-generation (T32) Nissan X-Trail boasts a dynamic, elegant, and stylish exterior with sharp lines and sweeping curves. It embodies Nissan’s current design language that includes the adoption of a v-motion grille and boomerang-shaped headlights and taillights. On the inside, the T32 X-Trail offers a 2-row or 3-row cabin that can accommodate up to five or seven passengers. It features a stylish dashboard with flowing lines that emphasize the roomy nature of the cabin. The center cluster has a more modern look, with gloss black accents and metallic accents; the instrument cluster and steering wheel also have updated, contemporary designs that you are sure to like. This generation also features cloth or optional synthetic leather seating materials, water-proof seats and floor that can be easily cleaned, an optional an intelligent key system, an optional electric retractable panoramic glass roof, and heated front seats (in the 20X, 20X “Emergency Brake Package”, 20X Extremer X, and 20X Extremer X “Emergency Brake Package” grades). The 20X Extremer X grade has an exclusive front overrider and undercover, large fog lamps, and 17-inch aluminum wheels. The Black Extremer X grade features dark-painted exterior features and adds LED headlamps and roof rails. The special edition Mode Premier grade adds LED headlights with LED daytime running lights, an exclusive front bumper design with integrated fog lamps, an exclusive dual exhaust muffler, 18-inch aluminum wheels, and a two-tone genuine leather interior. The 20Xtt grade features LED headlamps, fog lamps, an advanced intelligent key system, and 18-inch aluminum wheels.

Nissan X-Trail Utility

The 2nd-generation Nissan X-Trail offers a large cargo area behind the 2nd-row seats that has a flat, washable luggage board. It also has a hidden storage under the luggage board. If you take both spaces into account, this generation offers a cargo volume of up to 603 liters. It also features 60/40 split-folding rear seats that can be folded down flat to increase the vehicle’s total cargo capacity. The 5-person passenger section of the T31 X-Trail is also quite roomy, with plenty of headroom, legroom, and shoulder room for adults in both rows.

The 3rd-generation Nissan X-Trail offers a smaller but sufficient cargo area with a cargo volume of up to 550 liters behind the 2-row seats. The T32 X-Trail also offers a washable luggage board, and its 2nd-row and 3rd-row seats can also be folded down to create room for more cargo. While the 2nd-generation T31 X-Trail offers more cargo space, the T32 Nissan X-Trail offers a greater maximum seating capacity of 7 passengers. As such, the T32 X-Trail is ideal for large families. The outboard 2nd row seats in the 3-row T32 X-Trail have a mechanism that enables you to easily fold and slide them forward.

Is the Nissan X-Trail good off-road?

The 2nd-generation Nissan X-Trail (T31) offers a more advanced 4WD system than that of the 1st-generation X-Trail. The T31’s ALL MODE 4 × 4-i 4WD system is designed to monitor prevailing driving conditions e.g. the SUV’s speed, understeer/oversteer, and the traction at each wheel. Using this information, this system automatically adjusts power and torque distribution to improve road grip and driving control on all types of roads. In AUTO mode, this system sends 100% of the engine’s power and torque to the front wheels in normal driving conditions; however, when it senses wheel slippage, it adjusts the front/rear axle torque distribution to 50:50. This enables the SUV to overcome slippery patches of road with ease. In LOCK mode, this system maintains 50:50 front/rear axle torque distribution for improved off-road capability. This system also includes a ‘Yaw Moment Control’ system that helps to improve handling. This system detects the SUV’s yaw rate and steering angle, and based on this data, it predicts the driver’s intended cornering line and adjusts torque distribution across the front and rear axles to facilitate smoother cornering. In addition to the ALL MODE 4 × 4-i 4WD system, the T31 X-Trail also come equipped with a Hill Start Assist system that uses brake pressure to prevent the SUV from rolling backwards when climbing a slope or incline. The T31 X-Trail also come equipped with a Hill Descent Control system (in the CVT/automatic models) that controls the speed of descent of the SUV by automatically adjusting the throttle and the brakes as you are driving the SUV down a slope. The 2nd-generation Nissan X-Trail also has a high ground clearance of 215mm as well as 28-degree approach and 24-degree departure angles, so its undercarriage is unlikely to get scratched or dented when you drive it on dirt roads.

The 3rd-generation (T32) Nissan X-Trail inherits the T31’s ALL MODE 4 × 4-i 4WD system, as well as the Hill Start Assist, Hill Descent Control, and Yaw Moment Control systems. However, the T32 X-Trail has a slightly lower ground clearance of 209mm and less impressive 17.2-degree approach and 25-degree departure angles, so it is better suited to just moderate dirt trails.

Nissan X-Trail Tech Features

The 2nd-generation Nissan X-Trail also offers many tech features. Depending on the grade/model, it may feature an intelligent key system with a keyless start feature. This system senses your key fob as you approach and enables you to unlock the front doors by pressing a button on the door handle. Once you enter the SUV, you get to start the engine by just pressing a start button. The T31 X-Trail may also feature a 4-speaker/6-speaker AM/FM audio system with a CD player that has MP3 reading capability. This system may also include iPod connectivity via a USB connection. The higher grades features an infotainment system with a full-color touchscreen display. This system may include a Bluetooth handsfree phone system and a CarWings hard-disk-drive-based satellite navigation system. This generation may also feature automatic headlights that fully engage only when they are required, and rain-sensing windshield wipers that are automatically activated at the first sign of rain. The grades that have the full-color touchscreen display may also feature a reversing camera with predictive path technology as well as an intelligent Around View Monitor that provides a 360-degree view of the SUV’s immediate surroundings.

The 3rd-generation Nissan X-Trail inherits all the above tech features. It also adds features an optional full-color instrument cluster driver information display that provides real-time vehicle information in rich colors and graphics.

How comfortable is the Nissan X-Trail?

The 2nd-generation Nissan X-Trail offers a quiet and comfortable cabin with plenty of seating space for adults in both rows. The seats are large and supportive both in the front and the rear, and they feature high quality cloth/synthetic leather/pure leather materials that all look and feel upscale. Some of the grades may feature optional power-adjustable front seats that include heating functions. This SUV may also feature cruise control, an optional electric tilt/slide sunroof, optional heated and cooled cup holders, and an air conditioning system with center console air vents; the higher grades may feature an automatic climate control system that maintains the temperature that you set. The ride quality of the T31 Nissan X-Trail is also good.

The 3rd-generation Nissan X-Trail offers an even quieter interior thanks to its more refined platform that does a better job of shutting out road noise and vibrations. The interior of the T32 X-Trail offers richer cloth/synthetic leather/pure leather materials so you are sure to like spending time in this SUV. This generation also has newly developed, zero-gravity-inspired front seats with a spinal support function that help to reduce fatigue, so they are great for long distance driving. The T32 Nissan X-Trail can also be had with an optional, larger power panoramic moonroof that stretches over the 1st and 2nd rows. It also offers a more refined suspension system that provides better ride quality.

Nissan X-Trail Safety Features

The 2nd-generation Nissan X-Trail features six airbags that include side curtain airbags that stretch over both rows. It also features front and rear crumple zones, a Nissan Anti-Theft Safety System, front seatbelt pretensioners with load limiters, and child restraint anchorage points in the rear seats. This generation also comes equipped with a system called the Electronic Stability Program (also called Vehicle Dynamic Control). This system monitors the directional control of the SUV and automatically applies brakes while reducing engine output when it senses oversteer, understeer, or wheel slippage. This generation also features an anti-lock brake system that prevents wheel lock when emergency brakes are applied, an Electronic Brake Force Distribution system that varies the amount of brake pressure that is applied at each wheel depending on the vehicle’s load, and a Brake Assist system that facilitates the application of maximum brake pressure when you are applying emergency brakes; this makes the SUV stop sooner. This generation also has an Active Brake Limited Slip feature that applies brakes to a spinning/slipping wheel and transfers power and torque to the wheels that have better traction.

The 3rd-generation Nissan X-Trail also inherits all the safety features of the 2nd-generation X-Trail. This generation also offers an optional Intelligent Parking Assist system that automates parking for you by automatically steering the SUV into the parking spot when you get within close range of the desired parking spot; it can perform both reverse parking and parallel parking. The higher grades also feature an optional Emergency Brake Package that includes an Emergency Braking system and a Fixed Stepping Collision Prevention Assist system that both help to prevent collisions with pedestrians or traffic ahead, a Lane Departure Warning system that warns you when the SUV starts to drift out of its lane, and a Rear-side Vehicle Detection Alarm that warns you of vehicles that are coming up from behind when you are reversing out of a parking spot. As from the 2015 model, however, this Emergency Brake Package became a standard feature in all 3rd-generation X-Trail grades.
