Facelifted Mazda Demio Goes on Sale in Japan

HIROSHIMA, Japan—Mazda Motor Corporation today commenced sales of the facelifted Mazda Demio at all Mazda, Mazda Anfini and Mazda Autozam dealers throughout Japan. The Demio is Mazda’s mainstay subcompact car and is sold overseas as the Mazda2. Manufacturer’s suggested retail prices (including taxes) range from 1,149,000 yen to 1,621,750 yen. The target sales volume is 6,000 units per month.

The facelifted Demio offers even more of Mazda’s characteristic driving pleasure, a higher quality interior and exterior design, and comprehensive safety features. Additionally, the new “13-SKYACTIV” model grade delivers best-in-class*1 fuel economy of 30.0km/L (10-15 mode test cycle) or 25.0km/L (Japan’s new JC08 test cycle).

With increased body rigidity, thanks to localized reinforcements, and retuned suspension, the new Demio provides outstanding handling, reassuring high-speed stability and a comfortable ride feel. Design improvements, such as updated seat materials and the introduction of Mazda’s new family face, create a higher quality feel. The enhanced safety features include an ELR*2 three-point seatbelt and head rest on the second-row center seat.

The new 13-SKYACTIV model grade achieves best-in-class*1 fuel economy thanks to its newly-developed 1.3-liter direct injection “SKYACTIV-G 1.3” gasoline engine. It is also the first Demio to feature Mazda’s unique idling stop system, i-stop. The 13-SKYACTIV provides an improved engine sound, reduced wind noise thanks to sound-insulating glass, and more controlled airflow across the top and bottom surfaces of the body. The result is a higher quality ride and more energetic performance at mid- to high-speeds.

The 13-SKYACTIV comes with a new technology called “intelligent-Drive Master” (i-DM) that supports economic and enjoyable driving. Its extensive list of standard features also includes i-stop, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Traction Control System (TCS) and exclusive 14-inch alloy wheels. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price starts from an affordable 1,400,000 yen (including taxes).

Mazda expects the 13-SKYACTIV to be the core model grade in the freshened range, making up approximately 60 percent of Demio sales.

Main features of the facelifted Mazda Demio

1. Breakthrough engine technologies that achieve 30.0km/L (10-15 mode) or 25.0km/L (JC08)

The newly developed 1.3-liter direct injection SKYACTIV-G 1.3 gasoline engine is highly efficient thanks to the world’s highest*3 compression ratio of 14.0:1. The model grade equipped with this engine, the Mazda Demio 13-SKYACTIV, offers exceptional fuel economy of 30.0km/L (10-15 mode) or 25.0km/L (JC08).

  • A cooled EGR*4 system cools part of the exhaust gas and returns it to the combustion chamber in order to suppress knocking.
  • Newly developed multi-hole fuel injectors with six injection nozzles effectively suppress knocking by using the latent heat of vaporization to cool the combustion chambers.
  • Specially designed piston cavities prevent the flame coming in contact with the piston heads to reduce the combustion time and decrease cooling losses.
  • Mazda’s first dual sequential valve timing system (dual S-VT with electronically-operated intake) contributes to high power output and low fuel consumption.
  • Reduced mechanical friction in the engine – due to lighter pistons, conrods and other parts, and low-tension piston rings – decreases energy loss.
  • An updated version of Mazda’s idling stop system, i-stop, operates with a higher frequency, requires less fuel to restart, and achieves a smoother restart.

2. A high-quality and comfortable driving feel that enhances enjoyment

An improved driving feel provides a balance of precise controllability, high-speed stability and a comfortable ride feel.
The Demio 13-SKYACTIV model grade delivers a linear and pleasing ride. Drivers can enjoy a sense of Toitsukan, where one vehicle movement flows smoothly into the next, whether running, turning or stopping.

  • All grades offer a more comfortable ride and enhanced stability thanks to increased body rigidity, retuned dampers, and improved bush characteristics for the rear trailing arm mounts.
  • The 13-SKYACTIV model grade uses drive force control that optimizes torque delivery from the engine and continuously variable transmission (CVT). It responds precisely to slight movements of the accelerator pedal to provide the desired level of acceleration for smooth and linear vehicle movement.
  • The 13-SKYACTIV model grade uses aero parts – including an engine under cover and rear roof spoiler – to control airflow above and below the body. It achieves a top class drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.29, and improved fuel economy and stability when driving at high speed.

3. “intelligent-Drive Master” (i-DM): the world’s first driver aid that improves driving style and fuel economy

Mazda’s newly developed i-DM supports enjoyable driving while encouraging a driving style that enhances passenger comfort and improves fuel economy. Equipped on the 13-SKYACTIV model grade, the i-DM monitors the movement of the steering wheel and accelerator and brake pedals and vehicle speed. It displays a real-time evaluation of the driver’s driving style using a gauge and colored lights on the dashboard. At the end of each trip, the system provides a driving score and advice. The score from each trip is used to calculate a driving skill level, from Stage 1 to Stage 3. By progressing through the stages, drivers can feel that their driving skills are improving.

4. Sporty and high-quality design

Mazda’s new family face, a five-point grille used throughout the lineup, enhances the sporty look of the front design. Inside, the design of the seats and other parts has been updated to create a higher quality feel. Additionally, the 13-SKYACTIV model grade has exclusive design features, including a blue metallic engine cover, blue headlight rings and an exclusive rear badge, that reflect the pure and clean concept of Mazda’s breakthrough SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY.

  • Premium seat upholstery, a black meter panel, silver instrument panel garnish and other new features improve the quality feel and visual appeal.
  • A renewed interior color lineup includes a choice of Black or Light Gray*5 (except the SPORT model grade) and a special color for the SPORT model grade, Sporty Black.
  • The 13-SKYACTIV model grade is equipped with exclusive 14-inch alloy wheels, and newly designed 16-inch alloy wheels are equipped on the SPORT model grade.
  • A choice of 11 exterior body colors is available, including two new colors, Burgundy Red Mica and Aquatic Blue Mica (exclusive to the 13-SKYACTIV model grade).
  • All grades are newly equipped with a trip computer that displays information such as real time fuel economy and average fuel economy.
  • The 15C (with CVT), 13C-V and 13C (with a four-speed electronically-controlled automatic transmission) model grades feature Mazda’s eco-lamp.

5. Outstanding safety features

The facelifted Mazda Demio comes with enhanced safety equipment. Advanced active safety features complement passive safety features, such as Mazda’s Advanced Impact-energy Distribution and Absorption System, that provide high-level protection in the event of a collision.

  • All grades*6 are newly equipped with a, ELR*7 three-point seatbelt and head rest on the second-row center seat.
  • The 13-SKYACTIV model grade features Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) and Mazda’s Traction Control System (TCS).
  • In the 13-SKYACTIV model grade, the DSC is built into the electronically-controlled brake-assist system.

6. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)

Mazda records and analyses the vehicle data necessary to perform a vehicle Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The facelifted Mazda Demio will produce 11 percent less carbon dioxide (CO2), 6 percent less nitrous oxide (NOx), 5 percent fewer non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHC), and 7 percent less sulphur oxide (SOx) over its lifetime than the previous model.

HIROSHIMA, Japan-Mazda Motor Corporation started taking orders for its new three-row crossover SUV, Mazda CX-8, at dealerships throughout Japan today with sales to start on December 14. Manufacturer’s suggested retail prices (including taxes) range from 3,196,800 to 4,190,400 yen. The target sales volume is 1,200 units per month.

The CX-8 will be the flagship of Mazda’s SUV lineup in Japan. As a crossover SUV with three rows of seating, it represents a new people-moving option for customers who want to enjoy outings with family and friends but don’t want to sacrifice design or driving performance. The model features the full suite of SKYACTIV technology and a sophisticated design, courtesy of Mazda’s KODO design language, imparts a premium feel. Performance is effortless around town and on the highway, and all passengers, including those in the third row, will appreciate the quiet cabin and comfortable ride. Developed under the Mazda Proactive Safety philosophy, i-ACTIVSENSE advanced safety technologies support safety and peace of mind, essential for an enjoyable driving experience1.

The styling brings new depth and maturity to KODO design. The idea was to create a look both timeless and edgy, something that would continue to excite owners even after many years. As the flagship model in the SUV lineup for Japan, the focus was on creating a look of class and quality, and every interior part was chosen in careful consideration of its color and material.

The CX-8 is powered by an advanced version of the SKYACTIV-D 2.2-liter clean diesel engine. The most significant upgrades since the engine’s introduction in 2012 realize powerful driving performance that defies the traditional image of a people mover and excellent environmental performance. With Mazda’s unique G-Vectoring Control technology on board, the CX-8 is a car that drivers and passengers alike will enjoy both around town and on long drives.

Packaging was developed under the human-centered design philosophy, with a focus on ease-of-use as a three-row SUV. Three different seat types are available for the second row, providing seating for up to six or seven and allowing customers to prioritize space or numbers, depending on their needs. Seats can be folded down in a variety of arrangements to accommodate items of different sizes in the trunk. And the cabin is quiet enough that conversation is possible between the first and third rows, making the trip enjoyable for all passengers.

Some i-ACTIVSENSE advanced safety features, designed to support the driver’s recognition, judgment and operation, come as standard equipment.2 All model grades qualify for a “Safety Support Car S – Wide” rating3 under the public awareness campaign being run by Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and Ministry of Land Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. A new 360° View Monitor is also available, enhancing safety and peace of mind in various situations from backing into a parking space to passing oncoming traffic on narrow streets.

“Under our Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030 vision for technology development.4 Mazda aims to bring about a beautiful earth, enrich people’s lives as well as society and inspire people through the value found in cars,” said Masamichi Kogai, Mazda’s Representative Director, President and CEO. “We designed the CX-8, flagship of our SUV lineup in Japan, to provide driving pleasure based on this new long-term vision, and in development we were driven by a desire to create a new market together with customers who are seeking new lifestyle options. Moving forward, we want to create a strong bond with our customers so they will stick with the Mazda brand even as their lifestyle evolves throughout the different stages of their lives.”

■ Features of the Mazda CX-8

● A maturing KODO design theme delivers one-of-a-kind SUV styling
Mazda designers chose “timeless” and “edgy” as keywords for the design, hoping that a beautiful and premium-feeling design would add excitement to customers’ lives for many years. With a focus on genuine materials for a high-class look and feel, they created a new SUV design that speaks of driving pleasure, luxury and meticulous attention to detail, a perfect fit for the flagship of Mazda’s SUV lineup in Japan.

Exterior Design
A new SUV style based on a flowing horizontal theme presents a strong and powerful form with a look of maturity and dignity.

  • The contrast between the compact cabin and the body upon which it sits creates proportions that evoke spirited driving, a refreshing departure from the boxy look of most people movers. The bulge in the shoulder area and other touches produce a look of toughness befitting an SUV while the reflections that flow over the body surface add an air of dignity.
  • Seven exterior body colors are available, including Machine Gray and Soul Red Crystal, which were developed specifically for KODO design.

Interior Design
Designers focused on creating an inviting interior that imparts a pleasing sense of tension for all on board. Specially selected Nappa leather upholstery and real wood trim5 add warmth and an air of authenticity that improves with age. Surrounding occupants with refinements, the cabin feels like a comfortable study and exudes an air of quality and maturity.

  • Meters and controls are laid out symmetrically, creating a pleasant sense of tension that helps the driver focus on the road ahead. Decorative trim spreads horizontally across the dash, creating an expansive feel. Colors and textures were chosen to produce an atmosphere of affluence and composure.
  • Four interior packages are available, two featuring genuine leather and two featuring fabric. With the XD L Package, the upper section of the interior is black and the lower section matches the color of the seats. This chic, two-tone design creates an atmosphere of composure and warmth.

● Smooth driving, powerful performance
With a Jinba-ittai driving feel tailored to match human senses, the CX-8 provides smooth and powerful performance that defies the image of a people mover

An updated SKYACTIV-D 2.2 clean diesel engine

  • Updates to the SKYACTIV-D 2.2-liter clean diesel engine maintain the engine’s exceptional fuel economy while raising maximum output from 129 to 140 kilowatts and maximum torque from 420 to 450 Newton meters. Rapid Multi-stage Combustion, a technology which injects small bursts of high-pressure and extremely fine fuel spray into the cylinder in quick succession, improves combustion efficiency, reduces harmful emissions and makes for a quieter engine. Other new technologies include stepped, egg-shaped piston heads, ultra-high-response multi-hole piezo injectors, and a variable geometry turbocharger.

Transmission and drivetrain

  • All models come with the SKYACTIV-Drive six-speed automatic transmission. Customers can choose between front-wheel drive and the i-ACTIV AWD all-wheel drive system. G-Vectoring Control, which improves stability by controlling engine torque in response to steering inputs, is standard on all model grades.

Suspension and brakes

  • The suspension is structurally the same as that of the larger CX-9 (only available outside Japan), but damping and other parameters have been tuned especially for the CX-8. A rebound spring in the front damper enhances stability in cornering.
  • Seventeen-inch ventilated (in the front) and solid (in the back) disc brakes paired with a large master cylinder provide strong braking and excellent control.

● A high-quality and flexible cabin space
The cabin was designed for ease-of-use as a three-row SUV and to provide a comfortable and high-quality space for all occupants. Entry and exit are easy and even adults can sit comfortably in the third row. A flexible luggage compartment and variety of storage spaces cater to a wide range of purposes. The cabin is comfortable and quiet enough that all passengers can enjoy conversing while on the move.

Packaging

  • Packaging was designed in line with ergonomic principles. The first row allows the driver to find the ideal driving position, the second row is comfortable for people of larger builds and the third row can easily accommodate adults up to 170 cm tall. External dimensions suit Japan’s roads and parking lots, with overall length, width and height at 4,900 mm, 1,840 mm and 1,730 mm respectively.
  • Depending on model grade, customers can choose between two different types of captain’s chair seats (6-passenger layout) or a bench seat (7-passenger layout) for the second row. In the XD L Package model grade, a large console box with USB charging ports separates the captain’s chair seats.
  • With all three rows of seats in use, the luggage compartment offers 239 liters of space, enough for a rear-facing baby stroller or two golf club bags.6 Folding down the third row increases the space to 572 liters and a multi-purpose sub-trunk 307 millimeters deep sits below the floor of the luggage compartment. (All measurements are VDA, include 65 liters for the sub-trunk and assume no Bose® sound system.)

A quiet cabin

  • Sound absorbing materials in the headliner and around the D pillar help create a cabin quiet enough for all occupants to converse without raising their voices.
  • Wind noise while driving is reduced thanks to a parting seal around the upper section of the liftgate and aerodynamic roof rails (standard with the XD L Package) designed not to disturb the air flow.
  • A dynamic damper in the front suspension and damping materials in the rear wheel fender panel help to suppress resonance in the vehicle body, a major cause of road noise.

● Excellent safety performance helps everyone on board enjoy the drive
From reducing risk factors to mitigating damage in a collision, the CX-8 was designed to provide excellent safety performance in every area so friends and families can enjoy the driving experience with peace of mind. i-ACTIVSENSE advanced safety features2 come standard in every model grade.

Active safety

  • Available with a new 360° View Monitor2 that displays vision from cameras mounted on the front, back and sides of the car on the center display. The view changes for each driving scene, helping drivers to avoid hazards by enabling them to check their blind spots and distance from any obstruction.

Passive safety

  • A bifurcated structure is used below the C pillar for the first time in the lightweight and rigid SKYACTIV-Body.
  • An active bonnet comes standard on all models. The rear end of the bonnet pops up about 10 centimeters the instant that a collision with a pedestrian is detected, creating a space between the bonnet and engine that can reduce the impact on the pedestrian.

The new Nissan Qashqai: premium enhancements reinforcing 10 years of crossover leadership

GENEVA, Switzerland – Today, Nissan unveiled the new Qashqai crossover, with significant enhancements of the car’s premium character. The upgrades focus on a contemporary new exterior design, higher levels of interior quality and improved driving performance.

New Nissan Intelligent Mobility technologies have also been added, continuing Nissan’s ongoing journey towards zero emissions and zero fatalities. The new Qashqai will be available with ProPILOT autonomous drive capability. Controlling the steering, acceleration and braking in a single lane on highways, this will provide consumers with more control of their vehicle and a more confident drive, plus greater freedom when they want it, whether during heavy traffic congestion or high-speed cruising.

Paul Willcox, Chairman, Nissan Europe, commented: “We have put the Nissan Intelligent Mobility vision at the heart of our product strategy, guiding the development of every vehicle. The new Nissan Qashqai is proof of that, with enhancements which will continue to define and set new standards in the crossover segment.”

Interior enhancements

The Qashqai’s enhanced premium appeal is most obvious in the cabin, where an improved layout, higher-quality materials and advanced technology deliver a highly attractive and functional interior for all occupants.

The brand new range-topping Tekna+ grade includes new seats trimmed in high-quality soft nappa leather, with luxurious 3D quilting on the centre panels.

Also new is a D-shaped multi-function steering wheel with premium satin-chrome inserts. It features a new four-way controller for the combimeter display, for more intuitive use and less ‘eyes off the road’ time.

The NissanConnect infotainment system, complete with DAB radio and satellite navigation, now features a smart new user interface.

A new option for music fans is a BOSE seven-speaker premium sound system. For customers it represents a more complete audio experience, plus the opportunity to personalise in-car listening.

Exterior upgrades

To complement the interior upgrades the Qashqai’s exterior benefits from a fresh design, offering greater sophistication and a new ‘premium dynamic’ style. The enhancements include a completely revised front end, including the latest Nissan ‘V-motion’ grille.

The headlamps have been revised with a new version of the ‘boomerang’ Daytime Running Light signature, adding to the new Qashqai’s premium appeal. The addition of adaptive front lighting improves night-time safety.

At the rear, the car’s instantly recognisable ‘boomerang’ light motif is extended across the whole lamp, and now includes a contemporary 3D lens effect to enhance the signature shape.

Added to the Qashqai’s colour palette to boost its premium credentials are two vibrant new finishes. These include Vivid Blue, on the vehicle unveiled during Nissan’s Geneva press conference, and Chestnut Bronze.

More confident drive

The Qashqai has always been known for its confident drive. Thanks to a number of under-the-skin improvements, the new model maintains its outstanding handling performance. Modifications to the suspension, damping and steering systems have resulted in an even more refined on-the-road experience.

Improved use of absorption materials and increased rear glass thickness have led to a reduction in cabin noise from the road, engine and wind. Striking new 17, 18 and 19-inch alloy wheels are available, all aerodynamically optimised to maximise efficiency.

Even with so many enhancements, the Qashqai’s aerodynamic performance has not been compromised. It retains its class-leading drag coefficient of 0.31, and continues as segment leader on CO2 emissions, with only 99g/km from the 1.5-litre dCi 110 diesel. Such innovation contributes to low running costs for Qashqai drivers.

New Nissan Intelligent Mobility Technologies

Since its launch in 2007, the Qashqai has been at the heart of Nissan’s desire to democratise Intelligent Driving technology. With the new Qashqai that commitment to customers is extended even further.

Intelligent Emergency Braking is being upgraded with Pedestrian Recognition. Rear Cross Traffic Alert, to mitigate the risk of low-speed impacts when reversing out of a parking space, is now available on Qashqai for the first time. The Qashqai continues to be offered with Traffic Sign Recognition, Driver Attention Alert, Intelligent Park Assist, Intelligent Around View Monitor, Blind Spot Warning and Lane Departure Warning.

At the heart of the Qashqai’s appeal has always been its position as the ultimate urban crossover. It successfully blends the practicality and desirability of an SUV with the footprint, running costs and accessibility of a hatchback.

The wide-ranging changes to the Qashqai are based on extensive customer insight and designed to reinforce its position as Europe’s best-selling crossover. Approximately 2.3 million have been sold since the original version was launched in 2007.

The enhancements make the Nissan Qashqai a stronger and more exciting partner for drivers, ensuring it is ready for its second decade of crossover leadership.

2017 Nissan GT-R unveiled in Japan

YOKOHAMA, Japan (April 1, 2016) — Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. today unveiled the new 2017 Nissan GT-R, which had made its world premiere at New York International Auto Show, in Japan before its official launch this summer. The new Nissan GT-R will be displayed at Nissan Global Headquarters Gallery in Yokohama, Japan, after the unveiling today.

The new 2017 Nissan GT-R, which features by an exciting fresh look both inside and out, as well as major driving-performance enhancements and key new features, all of which represent the most significant changes made to the model since it was introduced in 2007.

The new GT-R’s exterior gets a complete makeover across the front end. The new chrome matte finish “V-motion” grille represents one of Nissan’s latest design signatures. It has been enlarged to provide better engine cooling and features an updated mesh pattern. A new hood, which flows flawlessly from the grille, has been significantly reinforced, contributing to stability during high-speed driving. A freshly designed front spoiler lip and front bumpers with finishers situated immediately below the headlamps give the new GT-R the look of a pure-bred racecar, while generating high levels of front downforce.

The GT-R’s familiar wind-cutting shape defines its profile, but the side sills have been pushed out to improve air flow. The rear of the car also received a through makeover. While the GT-R’s hallmark four-ring taillights remain, look closely and you’ll notice new bodywork to help improve air flow, as well as side air vents next to the quad exhaust tips. Also, the belt line that separates the lower black section from the body panel has been heightened to give the car a wider and more aggressive from the rear. These exterior changes don’t result just in a sportier-looking car, they create an aerodynamically efficient vehicle, with less drag but retaining the same amount of downforce as the current GT-R to keep the car stable at high speeds.

Step into the cabin, and you’re greeted by a premium interior that is befitting a high-performance sports car of this caliber. The entire dashboard and instrument panel are new and covered with high-quality leather artfully stitched together with TAKUMI precision. The shape of the dashboard adopts a “horizontal flow” that delivers a sense of increased stability for the car’s front-seat occupants, while the line from the instrument cluster to the center console provides a distinct driver-oriented environment for those behind the steering wheel. An 8-inch touch-panel monitor features large icons on the display screen to make it easy to operate. A new Display Command control on the carbon-fiber center console allows easy operation.

The shift paddles are now mounted to the new steering wheel, allowing drivers to change gears in mid-turn without having to take their hands off the wheel. The paddles themselves, along with theventilation controls, have improved feel and better sound when engaged or adjusted.

New for the 2017 GT-R are fresh colors inside and out that complement the car’s sophisticated character. An Ultimate Shiny Orange* applied with multi layered painting has been added to the exterior paint palette. The interior featuring semi-aniline leather, offers four different options: the newly added Tan* and Amber Black*, as well as Amber Red and Ivory.

“As the icon of Nissan’s driving performance, the GT-R continues to evolve. With the signature V-motion grille, the GT-R now possesses the latest Nissan design language. Its exceptional aerodynamic performance and upgraded interior have given the GT-R a more mature character, which will continue into the future,” said Nissan’s Executive Design Director, Mamoru Aoki.

The GT-R’s award-winning 3.8-liter V6 24-valve twin-turbocharged engine – each unit handcrafted by its own Takumi technician – now delivers 565 horsepower at 6800 rpm and 467 lb-ft of torque. The engines are the difinition of TAKUMI expertise. The improved output, which are the result of individual ignition-timing control of the cylinders and extra boost from the turbochargers, allow the new GT-R to possess superior acceleration in the mid- to high-ranges. It comes mated to a thoroughly refined 6-speed dual-clutch transmission that features smoother shifts and less noise. That familiar GT-R tone also has been upgraded with an engine that has never sounded better. The resonance of the new titanium mufflers and Active Sound Enhancement (ASE) enhance the driving experience.

The GT-R has always been regarded as one of the world’s best handling machines, and for 2017, its cornering abilities have become even better. A more rigid body structure and new suspension result in better stability through quick lateral transitions and higher overall cornering speed. Providing the grip are sticky 20 inch tires, wrapped around new “Y-spoke” machine-finished forged aluminum wheels.

Despite all the performance enhancements, the 2017 GT-R is the most comfortable model to date, with a new sense of elegance and civility that one would rarely find in such a high-performance supercar. The new GT-R exhibits a smoother ride quality than the outgoing model, and its cabin remains much quieter at all speeds and new sound absorption materials.

“The new GT-R delivers a heart-pounding driving experience at all times, on any road, for whoever sits in the driver’s seat. We have continued to push its performance boundaries to the limits – it’s even more potent than before. At the same time, more refinement has been added to take the entire driving experience to an entirely new level. We’re proud to bring you what we feel is the ultimate GT that possesses amazing performance, newfound civility and a rich racing history,” Hiroshi Tamura, chief product specialist of the GT-R, said.

Nissan Releases New X-TRAIL HYBRID

YOKOHAMA, Japan (April 7, 2015) – Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. today announced the launch of the new Nissan X-Trail Hybrid, which goes on sale on May 13, 2015 at Nissan dealers throughout Japan. The current generation X-Trail has garnered good reviews from customers for its excellent driving performance, realized by features such as its ALL MODE 4X4-i system and advanced chassis control technologies that have been adopted as world-firsts – as well as a variety of safety features such as Emergency Brake and Around View Monitor with Intelligent Parking Assist.

Equipped with the 2.0-liter MR20DD hybrid engine that enables both driving and environmental performance, the new X-Trail Hybrid delivers a comfortable driving experience with its powerful acceleration and remarkable quietness, which eclipse those of typical 2.5-liter gasoline engines. In addition, all the grades achieve tax exemptions. In addition, the new X-Trail Hybrid will have Forward Emergency Braking as standard equipment, expanding its safety technology features. Nissan is planning to introduce Forward Emergency Braking as standard on major models in Japan, by the end of autumn 2015.

Intelligent Dual Clutch Control is Nissan’s original, highly efficient hybrid system that drives the wheels and regenerates electricity by using one motor. With one of the two clutches completely separating the motor from the engine, EV mode driving in high-speed situations and highly efficient regeneration are realized. Thereby, the new X-Trail Hybrid achieves fuel economy of 20.6km/L (JC08 mode)*1 and the 2020 fuel economy standards in every grade, which means tax exemptions are applied.*2

Also, all the grades of the new X-Trail Hybrid achieve a 75 percent reduction of NOx (nitrogen oxide) and NMHC (non-methane hydrocarbons) in exhaust emissions over 2005 standards and SU-LEV certification.

The 2.0-liter MR20DD engine, which is optimized along with the hybrid system, improves its fundamental performance by removing an auxiliary belt and adopting a low-friction oil seal. The overall improved system also helps achieve fuel economy gains. The XTRONIC combined with the engine adopts the same step shift control as gasoline vehicles have, which contributes to superior fuel efficiency and strong acceleration.

The high-output lithium-ion battery is able to charge/discharge quickly. This contributes to high-speed, precise control of the electric motor and optimum clutch control, which both enable smooth start and quick shift changes. Also thanks to the battery’s compactness, the new hybrid X-Trail realizes a luggage capacity of over 400L (based on the VDA method), equivalent to that of gasoline vehicles.

With the adoption of the two-clutch system, which delivers engine and motor energy mechanically to the transmission without having a motor assist or a torque converter, responsive starts and acceleration are realized. It generates more torque than a 2.5-liter gasoline engine in all speed ranges, from low to high rpm, allowing drivers to enjoy a relaxed driving. Furthermore, even while traveling up a steep slope, excellent power is achieved by combining both motor and engine power outputs.

Additionally, NissanConnect with Navigation, the latest generation in-car navigation, information and entertainment system with smartphone link application, is applied to the model for the first time. The system offers useful mobile interrogation service*3 such as displaying apps installed in a smart phone on the screen, easily setting a destination by forwarding a position information from the smart phone and sending or receiving e-mails.

2015 Nissan Murano Press Kit

  • Third generation of Nissan’s popular flagship crossover symbolizes Nissan’s design-led product and brand renaissance
  • Murano styling delivers bold Resonance Concept’s refined intensity exterior and social lounge interior
  • Carries forward new Nissan design direction with V-Motion front end, boomerang lights, floating roof treatment and efficient aerodynamics
  • All-new Murano arrives in Nissan showrooms in late 2014

The first-generation Nissan Murano had a profound impact on the SUV market when it was introduced for the 2003 model year. In addition to being one of the first crossovers on the market, it offered a fresh design sensibility that combined an elegant style with premium features -without a luxury price tag. Murano quickly attracted a loyal, enthusiastic owner base and remained a “class of one” as other manufacturers scrambled to catch up.

The second-generation Murano, introduced for model year 2009, maintained its strong position as the halo vehicle for Nissan crossovers -even as new Nissan SUVs like the bold JUKE sports crossover, all-new unibody Pathfinder and compact Rogue joined the product portfolio.

When it came time to consider an all-new third generation, Murano had a high standard to meet – its own. So while the original was inspired by the elegance of the famed Italian Murano glassware from which the model took its name, the third-generation took its cues from the future, expressed in the form of the Nissan Resonance Concept vehicle.

A Concept Brought to the Showroom
“At Nissan, we create concept vehicles with an eye toward production, rather than just for entertaining auto show audiences,” said Andy Palmer, chief planning officer and executive vice president, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. “Likely few people who saw Resonance in its North American International Auto Show debut imagined that we could build such a futuristic design. But here it is, ready to hit Nissan showrooms less than 24 months later.”

Though one was conceptual and the other production-based, Resonance and the new Murano were created on parallel tracks – with shared design themes and key attributes such as their boomerang lights and unique floating roof treatment.

Like the first-generation Murano, the 2015 version is a highly sculptural, highly emotional design -one that once again stands out in a field known more for uniformity and utility-based styling.

“Murano owners live in an environment – home, work and car – that is beautiful, well-designed and efficiently run. They are social and embrace technology,” said Palmer. “The new Murano had to embrace all of these values, while also taking a major leap forward in terms of its ‘Wow’ factor.”

Working to capture the breathtaking spirit and artistry of the first Murano, the designers began by concentrating on the new vehicle’s sculptural qualities. Breaking the usual order of sketching, computer renderings and then clay modeling, the Murano team started working with small three-dimensional clay forms -literally exploring organic shapes and volumes with mini desktop sculptures. The process helped narrow down a new Nissan design direction focused on lightness and efficiency.

A Lightness of Form
“One of the central constructs for both the exterior and interior of the new Murano was to ‘elevate your experience,’ which is counterintuitive to the heaviness and chunkiness of the traditional sport utility vehicle,” said Nakamura. “This helped inspire the push for leading-edge aerodynamic and three key elements of our future designs – the V-Motion front end, signature lighting and the ‘floating’ roofline.”

In keeping with the idea of futuristic travel, the designers sought to create a gravity-like power to pull viewers into the design visually, while defying gravity with a lightness of form through the use of glass and flowing lines. The prominent glass areas of the first-generation Murano were retained and expanded with the new design, including the use of its jet-inspired roof and D-pillars that appear disconnected from the roof that help visually lighten the cabin. The result is a unique floating feeling that can be recognized from very far away.

Another key element is the continued refinement of the boomerang-style headlights and taillights, which were originally introduced on the Nissan 370Z. For use with the new Murano, the shapes were slimmed and pushed to extremes to look like they flow with the wind. “The lights’ LED Daytime Running Light accents are instantly recognizable at night. While becoming a Murano signature, they were an engineering challenge,” explained Nakamura.

The available LED headlights, while providing excellent efficiency and durability (versus halogen and xenon lights), required extensive tuning to refine the shape and light intensity. The design of the standard LED taillights had to be balanced with the required crossover utility, with the final shape seamlessly integrated into the rear glass, conveying a high-tech quality.

Murano’s sculptural bodysides also created an engineering challenge, especially in the strong curvature of the rear fender stampings. While similar in dimensions to the previous generation Muranos, the new design is slightly lower, wider and longer, enhancing the aerodynamics while not compromising the desired crossover height and stance. The lower rocker panels offer a balance of aerodynamics and ruggedness. Other critical details, such as the grille shutter, fender lip moldings, rear bumper surfacing, rear tire deflectors and integrated rear spoiler help achieve a more than 16 percent improvement in overall aerodynamics (versus the previous generation design).

“The designers and engineers invested three times the normal wind tunnel testing of the new Murano to get to its 0.31 coefficient of drag, on par with many sports cars,” added Nakamura.

A New Way to Travel
“Beyond the sense of elegant style and premium features, owners of the first two generations often tell us about the ‘effortlessness of Murano’ -the great front view, the low instrument panel, the comfort and ease of operation. These are all things we kept and exaggerated in the new model,” said Nakamura.

The exterior theme of futuristic travel and refined intensity continue throughout the Murano interior, starting the moment the doors are opened with its available advanced lighting system, open and comfortable feeling and use of premium materials.

Continuing the idea of a concept car brought to production, the new Murano shares the look and feel of the Resonance. The upscale social lounge interior, for example, creates an inviting and comfortable atmosphere. The instrument panel height is lower than previous Muranos. Centered between the outer wings is a large information and control center with an available 8.0-inch color display with multi-touch control. Keeping with the idea of “beauty with simplicity,” the number of audio and navigation switches has been reduced by 60 percent – from 25 to 10 -for a more user-friendly experience.

“We’ve learned from personal electronics that consumers aren’t always looking for devices that do more, they just want it done better,” said Nakamura. “People rarely read the directions for their smartphone because they know intuitively how to operate them. We believe vehicles should behave the same way -it’s a new and better way to travel.”

Adding to the driver’s sense of connectedness with security is Nissan’s Advanced Drive-Assist™ Display, an enhanced version of the popular instrument panel feature offered in the new Altima and Pathfinder. For use in the new Murano, it includes a number of new features, including a 7.0-inch high-resolution color display.

Available audio systems include an advanced Bose® design with 11 speakers (including dual subwoofers), HD Radio® and SiriusXM Satellite Radio (SiriusXM subscription required, sold separately). Also offered are NissanConnectSM with Navigation and Mobile Apps.

Nissan’s advanced NASA-inspired Zero Gravity seats are standard for front and rear outboard occupants. The rear seats are a three-cushion design, a first for a Nissan vehicle. Climate-controlled seats (heating and cooling) are available in front, along with available Quick Comfort™ heated rear seats.

Other interior features include standard Dual-Zone Automatic Temperature Control and Nissan Intelligent Key® with Push Button Ignition, along with available leather-appointed seating, heated steering wheel, steering wheel position memory, driver’s seat and outside mirror memory, power folding rear seats and Remote Engine Start with Intelligent Climate Control.

Overhead, the available Power Panoramic Moonroof enhances the open, airy feeling. The moonroof has a 40 percent longer sliding length and 29 percent larger opening than the previous generation design. It is projected to be among the largest moonroofs in the segment.

Conversation between front and rear occupants is encouraged by the new Murano’s “communication alley” created by the wide, low center console. The console also includes a compartment for rear occupants’ smartphone. There is also an available USB port for the rear seats that allows for control of music and display, along with ample storage areas and compartments throughout the interior.

“We want everyone to feel like they are being taken care of, not just the driver. It’s a continuation of the social lounge theme introduced in the Resonance Concept -a place you want to share with friends,” added Nakamura. “Of course, not to be overlooked is Murano’s crossover versatility, which is why the segment has become so popular in the first place.”

The new Murano’s cargo area has been reconfigured (versus the previous generation) to provide a projected best storage space in the segment (with seats up). The rear cargo area, for example, accommodates four large suitcases, while the rear seats fold flat for greater cargo convenience. With the easy rear seat release and available power rear seat return, Murano converts from people hauler to cargo ship or back within seconds. All configurations can be done from the back, with no walking to each door.

Standard 3.5-liter V6 and an Extra Set of Eyes
The 2015 Murano will be available at launch with a standard 3.5-liter DOHC V6 rated at 260 horsepower and 240 lb-ft of torque. Also standard is an advanced Xtronic transmission tuned for quick response and smoothness. Fuel economy is projected to be enhanced by approximately 20 percent versus the current generation Murano, due to the approximate 130-pound overall weight reduction, enhanced aerodynamics and engine/transmission efficiencies.

Like the previous generation, the new Murano will offer responsive handling and a comfortable ride through use of a 4-wheel independent suspension featuring a front strut/rear multi-link design. Also standard are 4-wheel disc brakes with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering. Sporty 18-inch or 20-inch machine-finished aluminum-alloy wheels are also available. The 2015 Murano is offered in front-wheel drive or intuitive all-wheel drive.

“While driving a new Murano is designed to be an exciting social experience, we also intend it to be a safe one,” said Andy Palmer, chief planning officer and executive vice president, Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. “We’ve given Murano ‘an extra set of eyes’ – a suite of advanced safety features designed to help look out for you.”

The new Murano incorporates up to four onboard cameras (front, rear, two side) and three radar systems (one front, two side) to provide input to a range of available technologies, including Blind Spot Warning (BSW), Predictive Forward Collision Warning (PFCW) Forward Emergency Braking (FEB) and Intelligent Cruise Control. The new Cross Traffic Alert (CTA) system utilizes radar to detect a vehicle approaching from either side of the Murano when backing out of a parking space.

Parking a new Murano is made easier with the available class-exclusive Around View® Monitor with Moving Object Detection, which is designed to reduce the normal complexity of parallel parking by giving an all-around view of the surrounding area from front, rear and side cameras.

The system is not just for parallel parking, however, helping view the vehicle’s placement in pull-in spots, garages and against curbs. The Moving Object Detection (MOD) system helps the driver to detect moving objects such as shopping carts or strollers when backing out via an on-screen notification and warning chime.

Murano also includes as standard the Nissan Advanced Air Bag System (AABS) with dual stage supplemental front air bags with seat belt sensors and an occupant classification sensor, front-seat mounted side-impact supplemental air bags, roof-mounted curtain side-impact supplemental air bags with rollover sensor and driver’s seat knee air bag.

“With advanced, purposeful technology designed to keep you safe and connected, along with its refined everyday driving experience, this all-new Murano adds the solid substance to go with its unmatched emotional style,” said Palmer.

A Range of Models, Now Assembled in America
The 2015 Nissan Murano will be offered in four grade levels when it goes on sale in late 2014: S, SV, SL and Platinum. Each is available in front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.

The new Murano also becomes the first Murano (and the ninth vehicle) assembled in Nissan’s Canton, Mississippi plant, which is the most diverse facility by number of models in Nissan’s North American network. The Canton Vehicle Assembly Plant becomes the global source for Murano production, creating export opportunities to more than 100 markets. Murano will be assembled on the same line as Xterra, Frontier, Titan and Armada.
