About the Toyota Landcruiser Kakadu

You may be wondering why the nameplate, Kakadu. For starters, Kakadu is the second largest National park in Australia. You may have heard of the famous Australian Outback Truckers who prefer to use the Kakadu in their errands around the Australian Outbacks.

Your guess might be as good as mine, having taken the nametag of a National park, this car is not your average Land Cruiser Prado. The Kakadu is one of the various trims that originate from the Australian Toyota Auto maker. These are GX, GXL, VX and the high-end Kakadu. They did not run out of letters while naming the Kakadu. It is with good reason this SUV carries the nametag.

Similar to other markets, in 2015, the Kakadu saw a major shift of the engine from a 3.0 Liter to the now infamous 2.8L Turbo-charged diesel engine. In August 2022, under the hood was an improvement on the diesel Engine. It saw the Horsepower stepped up by 27 ps. An increase to 204ps from the conventional 177ps.

The most outstanding feature you will spot on the Kakadu, is the stylish rear mounted spare wheel. This is to give extra room for fuel ensuring that this car can venture a little further when its counterparts are out of fuel. This gives it a longer range and this is a good feature to have on any off roader.  The average Prado with a flat tailgate has a fuel capacity of 87 Liters while the Kakadu, with its rear mounted spare tire gives room to an extra 63 Liters making the total amount to 150 Liters when both tanks are full.

This extra feature ensures that your journey does not stop due to fuel constraints. No one wants to be stuck deep in the Tsavo or Nairobi National park waiting for a refuel.

How does it suit the Kenyan Market?

The Kakadu in Kenya is mostly used by government parastatals, as it is able to cover long distances given the extra fuel range. The off-road capabilities on the car ensures that not even one thicket will stop you from getting to your destination successfully.
While in an urban setting, the car also performs well with a smooth ride offering comfort.

It gives an average fuel consumption of 7.9L/100Kms or 11-12.5Km/L. This is considerably good for this car.

What are the Exterior and Interior Features?

The Kakadu has many features similar to the common Land Cruiser Prado on the Kenyan roads. The major differences are the off-road capabilities and fuel capacity. As a standard, it spots the 19-inch alloys Prestige design. Additionally, it has the rear gate mounted spare wheel as the exterior design language.

Hopping in to the interior, we find seven Leather seats with privacy glass on the rear windows.  It also has 3- zone Climate air conditioning and a Tilt and slide Sunroof. This feature is optional depending on preference.

The infotainment system supports apple car play and android auto. Often, the Kakadu will have the JBL premium audio with 14 speakers.

Safety Features

Safety is always the manufacturers’ top priority. The Kakadu has seven SRS airbags. The newer model from the year 2018 has enhanced Toyota Safety Sense system. It is equipped with:

  • Pedestrian Detection
  • Cyclist detection
  • High-speed active cruise control
  • Lane departure Alert
  • Road sign assist
  • Auto High Beam.

These are to enhance the driving experience.

When parking, the car is equipped with rear and Front parking sensors with rear cross Traffic alert. The 360-degree cameras positioned all around the car for better blind spot monitoring also enhances this system.

Offroad Features

While off-roading, the front camera comes in handy helping monitor the front of the car while navigating tight spots to avoid scrapping the bumper. It comes equipped with a Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) and Multi-Terrain Select system (MTS) suited for various off-road demands.

An interesting feature that come in handy while off-roading is the adjusted headlight. It is placed away from the edge to avoid losing your light when you hit obstacles.

How spacious is it?

The car seats seven passengers with ample space. The only drawback is on the boot space that suffers if the third row seats are used. With five-seat configuration, there is ample boot space for extra storage.

What is Ground Clearance?

The Land Cruiser has a ground clearance of 220mm, which is ample to clear any obstacles along the way. The new 2018 Prado has a wider front approach angle to ensure the bumper does not suffer from sharp terrains.

How Easy Is It to Find Spare Parts?

Sharing a platform with the Toyota Land Cruiser from Japan, the spare parts are easy to get. The Prado has ruled supreme in the Kenyan market for the last 20 years.
