About the Honda CR-V

The Honda CR-V is one of the most popular compact crossover SUVs on the market. Being a crossover SUV, it offers both car-like and SUV-like attributes, and as such, it hits a sweet spot that appeals to many modern-day SUV buyers. The History of the Honda CR-V

1st Generation (1995-2001)

The 1st-generation Honda CR-V was one of the first-ever crossover SUVs to hit the market. In Japan, it debuted in 1995 for the 1996 model year, but SUV enthusiasts in the USA and Canada had to wait until February 1997 to get it. It was a 5-seater model, and it was based on the sixth-generation Honda Civic so it also got the Civic’s 4-wheel double wishbone suspension system. Thanks to the above, this CR-V model offered commendable handling capabilities and impressive ride quality. It was also available in only one trim level (the LX). This model also featured a standard all-wheel-drive system and a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter straight-four petrol engine that generates 126 bhp (94 kW) and 133 lb-ft (180 N⋅m) of torque. A front-wheel-drive model became available in 1998. In 1999, the 1st-generation Honda CR-V got a facelift that involved a slight exterior styling update and a new, more powerful 147-horsepower 2.0-liter straight-four petrol engine.

2nd Generation (2001-2006)

The larger, redesigned 2nd-generation Honda CR-V offers a roomier cabin with more cargo space at the back. Some of the initial models even came with 3-row seating. The 2nd-generation CR-V also featured significant styling updates both on the outside and the inside, and it featured a more potent 2.0-liter K20A1 I4 engine that added Honda’s fuel-saving i-VTEC technology. The engines of the Japanese, Asian, and Southeast Asian 2nd-generation CR-V models deliver 150 hp (112 kW) and 190 N⋅m (140 lb-ft) of torque. The 2nd-generation CR-V also added a front MacPherson strut suspension system. In 2005, the 2nd-generation Honda CR-V got a facelift that included both exterior and interior styling updates. The facelift also came with a more powerful 166-hp 2.4-liter K24A1 I4 engine for the all-wheel-drive models.

3rd Generation (2006-2012)

Honda redesigned the CR-V again in 2006, giving it a sleeker and more modern exterior and interior design. The 3rd-generation Honda CR-V was again larger than its predecessor and featured a rounder and longer body that yielded even more passenger and cargo space. The engine options remained the 2.0-liter K20A1 I4 engine and the 2.4-liter K24A1 I4 engine. The European models could also be had with a 2.2 L i-CTDI diesel engine that produces 147 hp and 258 lb.ft of torque. 4th Generation (2012–2016)

Honda did even better with the 4th-generation CR-V, prioritizing aspects like styling, comfort, convenience, technology, safety, and utility. This model is larger than its predecessor so it offers a more seating space in both rows and more cargo space at the back. This generation also comes with a great wealth of tech features that include an optional suite of driver-assistive systems. In terms of power, this generation also carries over the 2.0-liter I4 engine and the 2.4-liter I4 engines. The 2.4-liter engine is stronger though, with 188 hp and 163 lb-ft (220 Nm) of torque.

5th Generation (2018-present)

The 5th-generation CR-V is the most technologically advanced CR-V model yet. All its models offer many standard and optional tech features for convenience, infotainment, and safety. The 5th-generation Honda CR-V also gets new powertrain options, one of which includes a 190-hp 1.5-liter turbocharged I-4 engine.
